About Us

Knitting New Mexico was formed in 2018 to host local knitting retreats and workshops, welcome destination knitters from near and far, and bring knitting designers and instructors to New Mexico. The first Knitting New Mexico workshop occurred in September 2018 and featured Isabel Kraemer.

Knitters in New Mexico often have to travel out of state or other long distances to attend knitting retreats and events and to attend classes with prominent knitting designers and teachers. In creating Knitting New Mexico, I hoped to bring some of these experiences closer to home, making them more accessible for all local fiber enthusiasts.

I host knitting and hiking retreats (K1 Hike2) because I also am an enthusiastic hiker and backpacker and was inspired by Helene Magnusson’s (Iceland Knitter) knitting and hiking retreats in Iceland (hoping to attend one day) and the Maker + Stitch knitting and hiking retreat near Vail, Colorado which I attended in 2021. Knitting and walking (sometimes even at the same time) are a lovely blend of activities, bringing together creativity, color, art, movement, and the natural world.

Future plans for Knitting New Mexico include hopefully more workshops (day programs without lodging included) and more knitting retreats (with and without hiking).
